Are You Ready for #GivingTuesday?
Let’s face it- 2020 has been a difficult year for businesses, nonprofits, and organizations everywhere. Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a day to acknowledge charitable organizations that give back to the community?
If your organization is looking to effortlessly improve your fundraising revenue this season, make sure you mark your calendar for #GivingTuesday on 12.01.2020.
What is #GivingTuesday?
Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement founded in 2012 by 92Y and the United Nations Foundation. It is an occasion that celebrates all charitable organizations and encourages people around the world to give back to the community. Since the movement was founded in 2012, it has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity. Whether it’s in the form of donations, making someone smile, helping a neighbor or stranger out, or simply giving some of what we have to those who need our help, Giving Tuesday nurtures acts of generosity and reiterates that everyone has something to give.
Why Should My Organization Participate in #GivingTuesday?
Whether your organization is small, big, or enormous, you should absolutely make an effort to make an appeal during #GivingTuesday. Why? According to Give Lively, nonprofits raised over $300 million dollars on #GivingTuesday from more than 2 million donors last year. That’s a LOT of donations! And the best part? Even if you barely raise any money, your organization will benefit from increased visibility, preparing for the year-end fundraising rush a bit earlier than usual by nailing your appeal, and making potential supporters more aware of your work, while informing donors early about your cause.
Increased donations. More Visibility.
Getting involved with GivingTuesday doesn’t take much work at all. Here are 5 easy steps to prep for an increase in donations and more visibility for your cause.
Register your Facebook as a nonprofit. Before you can start receiving donations, you must first verify your Facebook page as a nonprofit. This is simply a matter of Facebook recognizing your page as a nonprofit, so you can have access to their robust arsenal of fundraising tools.
Here are the requirements:
Be a 501(c)(3) organization registered with the IRS.Have a tax ID number. Note that at this time, organizations with fiscal sponsorship do not qualify to use Facebook Payments to receive money from donations.Have a bank account registered with a licensed financial services institution. Bank account details, including the bank name, bank account holder's name (organization's name), and a legible and official bank letter or statement dated within the last 3 months. The date of birth and address of the charity's CEO or executive director.
While this process may seem daunting, Facebook offers a detailed resources page to help guide you in this process.
Build a Campaign#GivingTuesday is one of the biggest fundraising days of the year. While nonprofits have varying success on the big day, the right campaign can really give your organization a headstart on year-end fundraising. The best way to take advantage of the #GivingTuesday opportunities is to set a goal and build a campaign around achieving it. For example, if your goal is to improve your visibility AND increase the donations you’d receive, you may want to build a social media campaign that posts about your organization’s mission and asks for donations to support your cause. Here’s a great example of executing that goal from Movember.
The reason this post is pure gold? It’s short, sweet, and includes a call to action. By describing the problem and how the organization helps to solve it briefly, a first-time visitor has an overview of the cause and knows exactly where to go to make a difference. When it comes to getting more eyes on your cause via social media, the name of the game is learning how to say as much as possible with the fewest words.
Build a Donation Page on Facebook.Setting up your nonprofit’s Facebook page for donations is incredibly simple, and can yield astounding results. Why? It’s safe to say Facebook is revolutionizing the world of online donations. Users love the sleek and easy-to-use donation interface. And the best part? Facebook charges NO fees for donations made to nonprofits. Not only can you launch fundraisers for your organization, but other users can share the donation page, attracting more eyes to your cause! To receive donations, make sure you verify your page as a nonprofit and link a bank account to your page to receive payments. If you need help, Facebook’s support offers a detailed list of resources to guide you during the setup process.
Note: The verification process can take some time to be approved by Facebook, so make sure you send in the information as early as possible.
Build Out Your Content. In order to convey your cause and appeal to donors, you’ll want to accompany your social posts with some photos, or graphics in your post that reflect your brand’s mission. Thankfully, there are a plethora of free digital tools that any nonprofit can use to prepare for the big day and the year-end giving rush. Here are ten awesome free services that will help your nonprofit spread the word, organize your photos, wow your supporters, collect data, collaborate with your team, and, of course, raise more money!
Use the #GivingTuesday Hashtag. If you don’t use any of the above steps, make sure to use this last one. On your social media posts, make sure to use the hashtag #GivingTuesday. This is how new visitors will discover your cause, and how your visibility will improve. The hashtag is already going viral on Twitter, and the more your organization uses it, the better odds you have of appearing in a potential donor’s news feed!
